Me Thinks it's Gestational Diabetes

Today's sonogram appointment went great. It looks like we don't have a velamentous cord insertion after all, it's just a marginal cord insertion. Which basically means instead of the cord branching off before it connects to the placenta (valamentous), Bit's cord is attached to the edge of the placenta instead of the center. So huge relief there.

Bit however, is one chunky monkey. "Normally" babies at Bit's week should be measuring about 1.5 lbs. Bit is weighing in at a hefty 2.5lbs and measuring in at 25 weeks 6 days (we are 23w5d). Bit's Buddha belly is measuring at over 27 weeks!! So the doctor was questioning if I have diabetes :(

We have a call out to the midwife to see if I should go in for a glucose test early and if I should be doing anything different diet wise. Any suggestions??

Other than that it was great to see Bit again. Everything looked great. It was very cool to see Bit opening and closing it's mouth and holding it's hands up by the face. I know I'm biased but Bit is one cute baby.

I wouldn't go from measuring large to GD in a leap like that. But if you and/or your doc is worried about it, I know there are some ladies who've taken it around this time, just to make sure. It definitely can't hurt. *hugs*

So glad to hear that it's not the more dangerous of the cord issues, too. Hurrah for some victories. :)

I agree with N. It may not be GD, but just the way your bit is. The GTT isn't that bad. I drank the orange flavored drink but I've heard that the fruit punch is the tastiest. See if you can take it soon to see if you have developed GD. Either way Bit is super cute!!! :-)

Scans are generally a "guesstimate" so dont worry. I had severe gestational diabetes that was insulin dependent and my baby came out 7 lbs 14 oz!

no advice, just wanted to comment on what a super cute profile bit has!! :)

Well, my friend had GD and I lived with her during the whole time of her pregnancy. Her baby was tiny (7lbs and a few ounces) but 2 weeks early (she probably would have been closer to 10 if she'd gone full term). Even if you DO have GD, it's definitely not the end of the world. Lots of mamas get it and it's well managed with a different diet and insulin injections. I look at it as this: you'll get a lot of sonograms to check up on Bit!

Hopefully it is not GD but if it is a few of my pregnant (IRL) friends have GD and they have managed very well by eating healthy and following doctors orders. Their babies aren't HUGE or anything and if they get too big they just induce around 37 weeks.
As for bit, I'd have to agree that s/he's pretty darn cute! What a great profile!!

I don't know much about GD, so I don't have any words of advice about that, unfortunately. I hope it turns out okay for you!

Bit is super adorable, I loved the scan with the smoke ring caption, so cute! Thanks for sharing :)

I've read that as long as you are on a low refined carbs, high fiber diet, there is really nothing more you can do.

(and totally cute sono pics!)

Hum..I would just listen to your doctor. They are the experts...That being said, I know plenty of people that had GD and had completely normal and favorable pregnancies/delieveries. No need to stress about it.

Gorgeous pics! I think the smokering one looks like Bit is yawning and covering her/his mouth -a very polite baby!

Hope you get some resolution soon about the GD - at least if you find out early you can manage it well and it shouldn't cause any major dramas. Fingers crossed your test goes well.

What a beautiful baby, and the cutest foot! GORGEOUS!

Good to hear that you don't have that scary branching cord thing. No adice about the GD, but get it checked out if you can and then you'll know for sure.

Again - Cute baby

Beautiful pictures!!

Just keep in mind that sonogram weight estimates can be off my as much as 1/2 a pound, so Bit may be a little bit bittier :) than estimated. So glad he/she is healthy!

Bit has such a cute little button nose! I hope it's not GD, but if it is, at least that's a more common and manageable issue than the velamentous cord insertion. It must be so reassuring to see that s/he is looking so healthy.

I had GD with my son and he always measured above and each time I would FREAK out!! I told my OB several times that I didn't want to give birth to a toddler. When my son was born he was 6 lbs and 8.5ozs! If you do have GD it is not the end all be all (it's a hard diet at times, but definately manageable)!
Don't worry until you have too...believe me I spent way too much time worrying about the measurements and he was a peanut!! Best of luck!

I was young and stupid when I had my son, but I also had gestational diabetes. Is there any benefit to doing the test that you wouldn't have from just following the diet they suggest?

My son was eight pounds, eight ounces....and I swear eight pounds of it was his head!!

Dont worry, you can the baby is safe. To make you feel comfortable and safe, you have to go to the doctor and have a test using elisakit. It is important to have an assurance.
