Do we stay or do we go?

We have debating a lot about do we spend these last couple weeks at home resting or do we take advantage of this time and spend as much of it as we can out doing things. Every time we go out somewhere we catch ourselves looking around wondering if it will be the last time we are there for a while. We’ve been keeping pretty busy doing stuff with friends, having dinners for two at restaurants, and just taking advantage of the freedom of being able to easily go out. Along with the fun though we have also tried to stay on task with finishing up our to do list.

Speaking of which, we did an infant CPR class over the weekend. I was surprised at how jarring it was to push down so hard on a little baby’s chest (even if it was just a doll). I can’t imagine ever having to do that to a real infant, it almost makes me sick thinking about it. At least no we feel prepared that if something does happen we have the tools in our back pocket to do something about it.

The rest of the week is full of fun friend activities. We’re having a bunch of people over tomorrow to watch LOST, a friend’s birthday happy hour and a baby shower this weekend. All of these things help distract from the number of days we are away from our due date. I hope we don’t regret not spending more time at home and just resting.

Go, go, GO!

At the beginning, you won't have time to do anything except take care of the baby and long for luxuries such as a shower and a meal that wasn't prepared in a microwave. Eventually, things will settle down and when they do, you will have plenty* of opportunities to relax but none to enjoy a care-free, time-unrestricted, no-babysitter-required night out. I say soak those up now - as many as you can!

*as defined using new parent standards, which is to say you will have roughly 10% of the free time you have now, but that 10% will feel sooo generous compared to the -25% you had in the newborn stage, you will be over the moon. :-)

Yep, I agree. Get out and do things now!
The newborn stage is all consuming and little things like a shower become events. It's not that bad but it can feel a bit restricting.

Regardless, you really only need to worry about rest once Bit arrives. I spent the week before Sadie arrived sleeping and relaxing and it didn't help!! (; In fact, getting used to being up late is a good thing!

You will spend plenty of time at home sitting on your bum, soon. PLENTY.

Go the freak out, my dears. And don't feel one ounce of regret about it.

I wish that we had done more before we had Cabot. I was supposed to have two weeks off before his birth, but that didn't happen and was induced.

Make a few more trips to your favorite restaurants!! We find it really hard to enjoy a meal out now with our little one! He will only tolerate being in his carseat for so long and then we need to take him out to entertain him so we can scarf down our food. We've also learned to ask for the check the minute the food comes! Ha ha.

I say have a good mix of going out and home. Most of all enjoy the time you guys have alone...it will become a rarity!!

Do what you want to do and you won't regret a thing! I did a little of both:) I can't wait to meet your little bundle of joy!

I say go for it, as long as you have the energy and feel up to it. It might be a while before you can go to a nice restaurant or a movie again. It's not like you can store up the extra rest and use it later. Staying up all night with a baby is going to leave you tired no matter what, even if you did just spend the last 10 days lounging around the house. Especially since first babies often arrive later than their due date...you might have a little more time than you think.

New Reader here... we're due in mid July, so we're enjoying reading along. It was nice to see there's a cat cover for cribs!

We lived in Austin for 10 years, but work took us away a few years ago. We try to get down there at least once a year to hit all our favorite restaurants.

I am not sure what the previous comment is all about-- too funny with the shin plasters but anyway
thinking of you three-- Amy, Melissa, and your little one. I hope you are enjoying this time, and some wonderful long showers. One week to go? Amazing. I feel so honored to have been along for your journey, and I cannot wait to meet your baby.
All of the choices you are making that feel right, are right. Do what is best for you!

thinking of you,
Kate
