Identity Crisis

We had our OB visit this morning. Everything is looking good, Bit's heartbeat was 151. All in all it was actually a pretty routine visit compared to most. No ultrasounds or blood work just pee in a cup and ask my questions and we were out of there. Sounds pretty boring right, well it would have been if it wasn't for the mind blowing life altering event that occurred (besides Bit's presence of course.) I am officially A-.

I know, so what right? Well, when you go your whole life writing on forms and putting yourself in a box with all the O+'s of the world it's pretty shocking. I'm actually kind of surprised at how the news of not being O+ has affected me. I feel as though someone has told me that I have brown eyes instead of blue or that my feet are now appearing where my hands used to be. I'm sure my new A- self will slowly come to terms.

Since I am now A- and our donor was O+ this means I will have to have a RhoGAM shot. I'm kind of glad I didn't know this before as I think I would have been more of a stress case through the first trimester.

yikes! that would be jarring news to hear. kinda makes me nervous - i dont think my OB tested my blood type, i think he just took my word for it. i'll have to ask about that at my next appointment!

congrats on the routine visit! those are the best :)

Is it weird that I'm 28 and I don't know my blood type? I feel like it's some giant inside joke I missed out on.

Wow that is crazy! We didn't even find out our blood type until right before we selected our donor. Good thing too because our little one ended up needing a blood transfusion shortly after birth. Our twins actually came out with different blood types (one from the donor and one from my wife) which everyone was pretty surprised about.

I am RH- and have a positive donor too. I am in the middle of getting things organized for the shot. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I think it just means a little more running around.

It's not a big deal. My mom is (-) and my dad is (+), so my mother had to have the shot with all EIGHT of her pregnancies (I come from an embarassingly fertile family). As a blood donor since high school, I've known my own blood type forever and even asked my RE if I should consider Rh status in selecting a donor. She said it made no difference, so I picked a (+) donor too, and will have the shot when the time comes.

I'm actually surprised your RE didn't ask for blood typing when you began TTC. Mine actually made us get my DH's typed, like it mattered since we're 100% donor-sperm.

I am RH- and our donor is RH+. I do feel that the RH factor and spotting had something to do with our miscarriage. If you start spotting or bleeding at all, make sure you get that Rhogam shot within 72 hours. Other than that...everything else should be completely normal. =)

all negative moms get the rh shot no matter whether they have a negative donor or not. so its ok

Wow, that is surprising news!! I'm sure it isn't uncommon, and that everything will turn out fine!

I would be totally shocked by that too! My partner doesn't know her blood type. I keep pestering her to find out since we're hoping to use the same donor. I hope the shot isn't too bad!

It was a shock to me too! Both my parents and my sister are A+ so I had always assumed I was too. Nope, A- based on the test at the OB. Our donor was + so they perscribed the Rhogam shot. I'm a huge needle phobic and was terrified. In the end, after much research we decide to forgo the shots both during pregnancy and after delivery. The reality is that there is ZERO risk of Rh factor complications in a first pregnancy unless there is trauma or bleeding of the fetus. Being a lesbian we were 100% sure that this was my first pregnancy so unless there was some trauma involved there was no need for the shot during pregnancy. Of course, had I had any bleeding or experienced any trauma I would have gotten it. After delivery you are offered the shot again because if you have susequent children you would need the Rh antibody protection. I will never get pregnant again so I turned it down.

These were very personal choices and there is no risk with getting the shot, but I do not regret our decision.

It's a good thing you found out so that you can proceed knowing. I didn't know what my blood type until we start TTC and were tested by our clinic. I'm CMV- and that was the only thing I've been warned about. Not once has the bank or anyone mentioned RH type.
